WHAT?
A customer was once heard telling someone over their phone "...I'm in this crazy little cafe in the middle of nowhere!!!" - WE ARE NOT CRAZY, although many locals thought we had rocks in our head to open a cafe in a place that even they admit is pretty close to the Middle of Nowhere.

Perkins & Grey is a weekend cafe that aspires to bring nourishment and sustenance to its customers on every level. It is nestled amongst the pretty green hills of historic Jamieson (population approx. 240) in North-east Victoria. And it delights in bringing 'a little bit of the city' to the Middle of Nowhere.

WHO?
Bree Baker is the proprietor but she cannot take all the credit.

Gay, Bree's mother, is the driving force in the kitchen and the garden. She is responsible for turning out old-fashioned gems such as Passionfruit Sponge, Corned Beef on Toast and big Bushman's Breakfasts, perfectly offsetting Bree's bent for multi-cultural cuisine. We joke that one of Gay's definite specialities is 'Man Meals'. When not busy making miracles in the kitchen Gay is often found pottering in the garden, whether it be whispering to fairies or, more likely, stamping on caterpillars.

Since Perkins & Grey opened Gay has come and gone to varying degrees but has never been allowed to stop making her sponges. And whenever Bree gets stuck Gay ALWAYS comes to her rescue. (Thank you Mum!)

Jan (pronounced Yarn) is our lovable Dutchman who adds a bit of colour and cheer to the place. When he isn't present customers always want to know where he is. When he is around sometimes customers wish he would go away! And that's why we love Jan, because he is a little bit of everything and a whole lot larger than life.

Linda. Linda has proven to be one of the most reliable, competent, gentle, enigmatic, dry-as-a-bone-funny people that Perkins & Grey has ever had the good fortune to work with. She comes and goes much like a cat. And she takes a great photo.

Chelsea is the rising star of Perkins & Grey. Small in stature, gigantuan in capability. Bree fancies that Chelsea is a mini-me in the making. She hasn't been with us long but she has certainly wormed her way into our hearts.

Andrea is a gorgeous glamazon who comes to our rescue in many a busy time. She brings with her an inimitable combination of professionalism and silliness.

Amelia makes regular appearances on both sides of the counter at Perkins & Grey. Living locally, supermum to two charming children, creative and clever, Amelia forever inhabits a soft spot in our heart as she was with us in the very beginning (when she was heard to ask with a note of exasperation "has anyone here EVER worked in a cafe before??" But we have come along in leaps and bounds since then, thank goodness)

The Angel / Fairy Godmother of Perkins & Grey, otherwise known as Mr McTickles*
When the cafe first opened an unassuming gentleman approached us to ask that we keep our kitchen scraps for his chickens and compost. We happily complied.
In the spring time he brought us some of his produce. As the business has grown so has Mr McTickles' compost. Eggs, lemons, limes, cucumbers, tomatoes, the list goes on.
So you never know, you may just be tucking into a local, lovingly tended, organically-rich vegetable grown by Mr McTickles at any moment. Special mention must be made of the fact that Mr McTickles is our sole source of passionfruit for our sponge cakes.
Mr McTickles is also responsible for the beautiful roses and flowers that adorn the tables at Perkins & Grey, including the heavenly double-delight roses that customers often describe as their favourite thing about the cafe.
*Mr McTickles' name has been changed to preserve his anonymity.
